blue period
This body of work is inspired by the cyanotype process which was first introduced by John Herschel in 1842. My cyanotypes combine photography and painting, blurring the line between realism and abstraction.
Ella se Llevanta
"Ella se llevanta" pays homage to the artist Frida Kahlo and symbolizes her ability to transcend her physical limitations, embodying her famous quote, "¿Pies, para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar?" ("Feet, why do I need you when I have wings to fly?"). Known for her unique perspective, Kahlo's work is often linked to 'magic realism,' despite her rejection of the surrealist label. Her art is deeply informed by her experiences with chronic pain and disabilities, stemming from childhood polio and a severe bus accident at 18, which left her with lifelong injuries and unable to have children.
Kahlo's frequent self-portraits are not just a reflection of her talent but also a product of her isolation during recovery. She painted from her bed using a custom easel, allowing her to express her pain and reality. Her works often portray her medical struggles, blending personal narrative with broader themes of disability. Kahlo's legacy extends beyond art; she serves as a role model for marginalized communities, including women, Latinas, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities, challenging stigma and celebrating her uniqueness.
Cacao Sagrado Series
My cacao series is inspired by the sacred cacao, which played a special role in Mayan and Aztec ceremonies, festivals, weddings, feasts and religious rites. It was associated with the deity Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god responsible for the creation of mankind. Legend says that Quetzalcoatl gave man cacao to drink against the wishes of the other gods.
Awakening Series
In my "Awakening" series, I forever capture the ephemeral beauty of Spring blossoms and the ever-changing landscape. The intense Prussian blue adds depth and drama to the work, while my addition of spices, pastel, charcoal, marker, acrylic and watercolor add layers of texture and complexity. As I continue to explore the boundaries of this traditional medium, I delight in the spontaneous outcomes of my intuitive journey.
